Standard Icons

Using a standard set of icons across our sites allows users to learn the significance of the symbol once, and re-use that information repeatedly.

All GIFs have invisible backgrounds so that they can be presented on any pale-colored background.

All weather PNGs (currently tailored for use with the Accuweather system) have gradients and semi-transparent backgrounds. They have been designed and coded (including an IE6 workaround) for display on any medium- to pale-colored background.
NOTE this page does not validate. The display of the weather icons on PC IE6 uses a workaround that does not validate when repeated on the page. Because this page displays more than one weather icon at a time, it does not validate. However, our public pages will not display more than one icon at a time; the workaround will validate there.

Using the same weather iconography across sites is especially important where accompanying forecast text is minimal or absent.
